Flower Mill Grinder Review

The Flower Mill is a premium toothless weed grinder. As its name suggests, it is more of a mill and less of a shredder. Its top section is a heavy, grooved stainless steel surface that squashes and pulverizes the herb rather than tearing it.

Flower Mill has customizable grind plates, and it comes in a variety of sizes and options, including Stainless Steel, which I’ve used for my review.

Of all the toothless weed grinders I’ve tested, the Flower Mill 2.5 Stainless is the best. It’s a $95 grinder.

Not Your Average Weed Grinder

The Flower Mill wrote the book on toothless weed grinders. This grinder was the first of its kind when I tested an early version back in 2017. It has seen several significant revisions over the years, and its latest evolution is one of the greatest.

This toothless weed grinder uses traditional milling technology to break down cannabis nuggets naturally. The swappable stainless steel grind plate has holes that allow the ground herb to fall through once it’s reached the perfect consistency.

The top milling plate and the bottom grater plate do not come in contact with each other. This is a precision milling device.

Why it’s Unique

I can’t vouch for the difference in effects, but the toothless grinding experience is much more sensuous than a toothed grinder. Using the Flower Mill is a responsive experience. There’s a feel for it, if you’re feeling for it.

I can feel the nuggets crumbling and breaking down in my hands, and the feeling provides a new level of control that I didn’t know I needed. I can adjust the pressure or twist to compensate for nug density. Milling is a new sense to add to the cannabis ritual.

It’s an enjoyable experience, especially if I’m looking for a meditative and awareness-driven vibe. I enjoy breaking my nugs up into two or three equal-sized chunks and feeling them break down in the Flower Mill. It’s a different type of enjoyment than the typical cutting and tearing of toothed grinders.

Flower Mill claims to be designed with minimal friction in mind to preserve trichomes. I’m not sure how much difference there is in reality, but it’s something I’ll test in the future. My Flower Mill shows signs of smeared trichomes and grinder hash buildup after a few weeks of testing, but it could be the result of me pushing too hard.

Design and Build Quality

The Stainless Steel 2.5 Flower Mill is very well made! This grinder has seen several refinements and revisions to perfect its features. It feels great to use and hold in the hand.

The milling top is heavy, but its magnet is super strong, so the unit feels secure.

Changing Grind Plates is a Breeze

The Flower Mill’s grinder plate can be quickly swapped for a different grind consistency. Just unscrew the stainless steel ring from the top of the midsection. The grinder plate lifts in and out. The Flower Mill came with the Medium plate. Additional grinder plates are about $12.

Flower Mill was kind enough to send me all four of the additional plates. See them compared below.

Removable Kief Screen is Best in Class

There are a lot of removable kief screens these days, but the Flower Mill does it better than any other grinder. Removing the screen doesn’t alter the Flower Mill’s already perfect weed well. To remove the kief screen, unthread the insert and pop off the screen. Replace the insert in the bottom half of the grinder for a slightly larger storage area.

What About Wet Weed?

Moist nugs can be troublesome for all toothless grinders. Dry nugs break apart easily, but moisture holds the cellulose structure of the nugs together better.

I like to keep my flower at 58-60%. Anything above that can be a problem for some grinders and even some vaporizers.

The Flower Mill works perfectly with nugs that are 50-60% relative humidity. Nugs with more moisture will still grind just fine, but they may require additional force or finesse while milling. Sometimes this additional pressure causes moist nugs to leave skid marks on the grind plate. That’s life. It’s why we wear underwear.

When my nugs are exceptionally moist, I’ll pull them apart into pieces that are more digestible by the Flower Mill.

The Fine plates are more susceptible to tumbling and smearing than the Medium and Coarse plates.

Milling / Grind Consistency – Which Plate is Best?

Grind preferences are often highly subjective and contextual. Flower Mill offers five different grind plates for the Premium mill. They include the Medium plate by default.

I like a fine grind, because the finer grinds provide the fastest extraction and the punchiest vapor. I use a ball vape that extracts everything in one hit. A Fine grind consistency allows maximum surface area for convection and conduction to extract everything fully.

I love bringing people together and I love helping them understand the ins and outs of vaping weed.
