Healthy Rips has a few budget-friendly weed grinders. This review will cover all of the SHRED grinders, but will focus on the 4-piece grinders. These SHRED grinders are a great value. The $35 grinder has excellent performance, a good grind, and low maintenance. The $25 version is still better than most cheap metal grinders.
There are three SHRED grinders available on the Healthy Rips website.

HR SHRED 2.5″ Four Piece Grinder Review
This little grinder is a fantastic value for only $35. It’s a four-piece grinder with a kief catcher that’s easily removed. This grinder has sharp teeth that work well with moist sticky nugs as well as hard dry nugs.

The 2.5 HR SHRED has a kief screen insert that removes without threading, while the main section of the grinder is threaded.
This grinder is identical to the SLX grinder, but without the ceramic coating. These trapazoidal grinder teeth are very sharp!

The 2.5″ SHRED’s teeth are sharp and numerous, with larger-than-normal holes for the herb to fall through. This grinder has more teeth than most grinders, but also larger holes. The result is a marvelous chunky medium consistency.
As with most grinders, the 2.5″ SHRED performs differently with moist nugs and dry nugs. It excels with both.
Moist sticky nugs are ground into a fluffy, medium-chunk grind that’s perfect for vaporizers.
Dense, dry nugs are chopped into little morsels that are easy to manage and great for vapes.
The 2.5″ HR SHRED outperforms the SLX 2.5 in every way. It’s cheaper, it’s smoother, it grinds better, and it feels better.

2.5″ HR SHRED Grind Consistency
The 2.5″ Healthy Rips SHRED grinder has a medium-coarse grind consistency. Drier nugs have a coarser result than moist nugs. This grinder does a great job with both, but it shines with dry weed. Dry weed turns to dust in most weed grinders, but this teeth design manages to chop dry weed up into perfectly vapable bundles of bud.

The grind consistency and performance of this grinder are its strong points.
It can go a long time between cleanings, and it’s airtight enough to hold herb overnight.
My only complaint with this grinder is the angles of the weed storage area.
- With the kief screen installed, the weed storage area has angled edges. It’s tough to scoop ground herb out without spilling over the sloped edges.
- Without the kief screen, the weed storage area has vertical edges and a tight 90-degree angle that holds onto the last pinch of weed until you tip it upside-down.
I like this grinder more than the premium ceramic-coated counterpart. The SLX ceramic-coated grinder still gets gummed up with moist nugs, and the bare metal has a better feel than the ceramic coating.
Why the 2.5″ SHRED is my BEST BUDGET GRINDER
When it comes to the budget grinders, there aren’t many decent weed grinders that can withstand heavy use. Cheap grinders get too gummed up to use after a handful of uses. All the best weed grinders are 70-200 bucks, though, and that’s just not realistic for most casual smokers.
For $35, this weed grinder is small enough to travel and big enough to serve on a desktop.
It can be used as a four-piece grinder or a three-piece grinder. It’s easy to switch!
Its teeth are sharp, and its grind is good. Grind quality matters, and this is a good one.
It can grind a lot of weed between cleanings. I don’t like to clean my grinders. This one can be pushed without catastrophic failure. That’s important to me because sometimes it may take me a few months to tackle today’s to-do list.
2.25″ vs 2.5″ SHRED Weed Grinders
The cheaper, slightly narrower 2.25″ grinder looks cooler in photos, and it’s ten bucks cheaper.
The 2.25″ has an entirely different tooth design.

The 2.25″ version has substantially fewer teeth, and the teeth are HUGE. These massive teeth have elongated surfaces that mash the herb and roll the precious trichomes into little wads of weed lint.
This grinder doesn’t work as quickly as others and is easy to overload. It works best with small amounts, less than .5g at a time. This tooth design looks cool, but it’s not good.
Both Work as 4-piece Grinder or 3-piece
The 2.5″ SHRED grinder uses a plastic insert with a screen as a kief separator. It’s easy to remove it and set it aside to convert the grinder into a 3-piece grinder. This doesn’t change the physical appearance of the grinder at all.
The 2.25″ version has metal threads on the kief screen section. It’s easily removed to convert the grinder into a 3-piece grinder, which also makes this grinder almost a half-inch shorter.
Neither grinders are great at separating kief. The screens let a lot of organic material through in addition to the trichome heads. If you’re looking for the best weed grinder for catching kief, check out the Santa Cruz Shredder.

This is the only HR Grinder I recommend.
Why Not the Two-Piece Grinder?
I’m allergic to two-piece weed grinders. I like to grind up more than I plan to vape and store the remainder in the grinder.
Two-piece weed grinders don’t have any weed storage. The ground herb needs to be dumped out onto a rolling tray or similar. I don’t want that, I don’t like that. I don’t want my weed touching any surfaces beyond what is required.
My Jar -> Grinder -> Scoop -> Vape
Dumping my freshly ground cannabis out onto a tray would maximize its surface area, hence maximizing the terpenes lost and THC oxidized. None of this sounds good to me. This is why I use three or four piece grinders.
