Flower Mill Grinder Review

The Flower Mill is a premium toothless weed grinder. As its name suggests, it is more of a mill and less of a shredder. Its top section is a heavy, grooved stainless steel surface that squashes and pulverizes the herb rather than tearing it.

Flower Mill has customizable grind plates, and it comes in a variety of sizes and options, including Stainless Steel, which I’ve used for my review.

Of all the toothless weed grinders I’ve tested, the Flower Mill 2.5 Stainless is the best. It’s a $95 grinder.

Not Your Average Weed Grinder

The Flower Mill wrote the book on toothless weed grinders. This grinder was the first of its kind when I tested an early version back in 2017. It has undergone several significant revisions over the years, and its latest evolution is one of the most notable.

This toothless weed grinder uses traditional milling technology to break down cannabis nuggets naturally. The swappable stainless steel grind plate has holes that allow the ground herb to fall through once it reaches the perfect consistency.

The top milling plate and the bottom grater plate do not come in contact with each other.
This is a precision milling device.

This “Grinder” is Different

I can’t vouch for the difference in effects, but the toothless grinding experience is much more sensuous than a toothed grinder. Using the Flower Mill is a responsive experience. There’s a feel for it, if you’re feeling for it.

I can feel the nuggets crumbling and breaking down within the Flower Mill, and the feeling provides a new level of control that I didn’t know I needed. I can adjust the pressure or twist to compensate for nug density. Milling is a new sense to add to the cannabis ritual.

It’s an enjoyable experience, especially if I’m looking for a meditative and awareness-driven vibe. I enjoy breaking my nugs up into two or three equal-sized chunks and feeling them break down in the Flower Mill. It’s a different type of enjoyment than the typical cutting and tearing of toothed grinders.

Flower Mill claims to be designed with minimal friction in mind to preserve trichomes. I’m not sure how significant the difference is in reality, but I’ll test it in the future. My Flower Mill shows signs of smeared trichomes and grinder hash buildup after a few weeks of testing, but it could be the result of my pushing too hard.

Design and Build Quality

The Stainless Steel 2.5 Flower Mill is very well made! This grinder has seen several refinements and revisions to perfect its features. It feels great to use and hold in the hand.

The milling top is heavy, but its magnet is super strong, so the unit feels secure.

Changing Grind Plates is a Breeze

The Flower Mill’s grinder plate can be quickly swapped for a different grind consistency. Just unscrew the stainless steel ring from the top of the midsection. The grinder plate lifts in and out. The Flower Mill came with the Medium plate. Additional grinder plates are about $12.

Flower Mill was kind enough to send me all four of the additional plates. See them compared below.

Removable Kief Screen is Best in Class

There are a lot of removable kief screens these days, but the Flower Mill does it better than any other grinder. Removing the screen doesn’t alter the Flower Mill’s already perfect weed well. To remove the kief screen, unthread the insert and pop off the screen. Replace the insert in the bottom half of the grinder for a slightly larger storage area.

The lower portion of the Flower Mill unscrews to access the kief screen

What About Wet Weed?

Moist nugs can be troublesome for all toothless grinders. Dry nugs break apart easily, but moisture holds the cellulose structure of the nugs together better.

I like to keep my flower at 58-60%. Anything above that can be a problem for some grinders and even some vaporizers.

The Flower Mill works perfectly with nugs that have a relative humidity of 50-60%. Nugs with more moisture will still grind just fine, but they may require additional force or finesse while milling. Sometimes this additional pressure causes moist nugs to leave skid marks on the grind plate. That’s life. It’s why we wear underwear.

When my nugs are exceptionally moist, I’ll pull them apart into pieces that are more digestible by the Flower Mill.

The Fine plates are more susceptible to tumbling and smearing than the Medium and Coarse plates.

Milling / Grind Consistency – Which Plate is Best?

Grind preferences are often highly subjective and contextual. Flower Mill offers five different grind plates for the Premium mill. They include the Medium plate by default.

I like a fine grind, because the finer grinds provide the fastest extraction and the punchiest vapor. I use a ball vape that extracts everything in one hit. A Fine grind consistency allows maximum surface area for convection and conduction to extract everything fully.

Flower Mill Grind Examples

Medium Grind Plate

I found the Medium to be too coarse for my liking. This chunky grind vapes slower than I prefer. Many will like this grind though!

Flower Mill Fine Grind

The fine grind appears chunky in the close-up photo because it’s consistent. This is what a high-quality grind should look like.

Flower Mill Super Fine Grind

The Extra Fine plate has the smallest chunk size. It’s slightly more inconsistent than the regular Fine grind plate, and it also takes longer to achieve this level of consistency. I love the performance of the Extra Fine grind in my vaporizers, but I may switch back to the Fine grind because it’s faster.

After 8+ Ounces of Use

I’ve been using the Flower Mill as my primary weed grinder, and loving it. After more than eight ounces of California’s finest herb, my grinder shows it – but it continues to work just fine.

Super Fine plate after 8+ ounces

The grind plate exhibits the most signs of wear and usage. This level of caked-on grinder hash absolutely affects the efficiency and feel of the grinding experience, but it doesn’t cause the Flower Mill to fail! It still grinds just fine!

Sometimes the layer of hash will peel off and get ground up with the nug. Bonus!

The top milling surface is also caked with hash.

When the Flower Mill gets this dirty, its top plate becomes visibly layered with sticky hash. Pressing harder while grinding helps remove some of the caked-on smashed herb.

I push grinders hard, using them without cleaning until they fail. The Flower Mill has not failed. It joins the ranks of a select few top performing weed grinders.

Cleaning the Flower Mill

To be clear, I have not found the need to clean my Flower Mill. I insist on pushing it “until it fails” – and it has not yet failed me.

Cleaning the Flower Mill is simple – it comes down to cleaning these three pieces.

Dirty Flower Mill pieces before cleaning

To clean the Flower Mill Next Gen Stainless Steel Grinder

  • Disassemble the mid-section of the Flower Mill by unscrewing the top ring and removing the grind plate
  • The bottom section and kief screen are likely not to require cleaning. Focus on the above 3 pieces
  • (optional). Freeze the pieces for 30 minutes and then brush/scrape as much of the hash off as possible. This is smokable concentrated cannabis!
  • Soak the pieces in 71%-99% isopropyl alcohol and use a short-bristle brush to wipe off the sticky residue. Alcohol will dissolve the THC goo quickly.
  • Dry the pieces thoroughly before reassembling your Flower Mill

What I LOVE about the Flower Mill

  • I love feeling my nugs break apart and move through the grind plate. There’s a unique satisfaction in the hand-feeling of using the Flower Mill.
  • I love its ability to grind very fast if I so desire. Pushing down harder while twisting makes the grinder dirty, but it also grinds the nugs more quickly. Sometimes, time is money.
  • I love picking the stems out of the milling area. With the right finesse, I can mill down my nugs, leaving only the little chunks of stem. Stems vape harshly and taste bad. The Flower Mill keeps stems out of the ground herb.
  • I love the deep weed well. The bottom area can hold several grams of ground herb. The corner isn’t very scoop-friendly, but the tall walls make up for it.

What’s Not to Love?

It’s hard to find fault in the Flower Mill. Toothless grinders may not be for everyone

The Flower Mill forces you to feel the process. You’ll feel every nug in your fingers as you strip the chunks of flower from the stem and load the grinder. You’ll feel them break down in between the milling plates as the Flower Mill turns your nugs into perfectly ground flower.

Using Kief is a bit Clunky

The weed storage section unscrews to reveal the kief area. But the edges are threaded, so dumping the kief is not an option.

Collecting kief? Better bring a scoop.

I don’t usually bother with kief these days, but I’m looking forward to vaping this layer of THC goodness. The obsessive-compulsive triggers in my brain are very worried about getting kief all up in those threads, though.

Threaded Grinder in a Threadless Grinder World

Many of today’s best weed grinders are threadless. Newer innovative grinder designs are faster to open and require less motion.

The Flower Mill is threaded, but it only requires a half-turn to open.

Flower Mill Grinder Options

The Flower Mill is available in various sizes and styles.

The Next Gen Standard is the most affordable Flower Mill. These grinders are made out of 6061 Aircraft Aluminum and have a simpler design than the one I’ve reviewed. These 3-piece grinders are available in two-inch and two-and-a-half-inch sizes. This grinder has five cool color options!

Next Gen Premium 2″ is a multipart design with customizable grind plates. This size is two inches in diameter and available in Aluminum or Stainless Steel.

Next Gen Premium 2.5″ is the largest version of the Flower Mill. It’s available in Stainless Steel or Aluminum.

I've been medicating with vaporizers, legally, since 2012. I started reviewing dry herb vaporizers and other cannabis products in 2015. I fell in love with creating content around vapes and cannabis vaporization. I'm passionate about the topic and the community. I love bringing people together and I love helping them understand the ins and outs of vaping weed.
