Davinci IQ3 Review

Davinci has returned to the dry herb vaporizer market with an updated and improved IQ3.

The Davinci IQ3 is the first significant update to the IQ since its launch in 2016. The 2024 Davinci IQ3 has the following upgrades:

  • 21700 Battery – A larger, newer battery with a higher power density
  • Cool Core™ – The spiraled vapor path makes the IQ3 smooth and cool.
    • 54% cooler!
  • Larger Bowl – The Davinci IQ3 bowl now holds .7g!
  • Improved Airflow – The larger bowl and air intakes give the Davinci IQ3 a 70% increase in air velocity

The new Davinci IQ3 is $299 and is available in 4 colors.

Davinci IQ3 Vaporizer Rating

I’ve ranked the IQ3 a 9.2 out of 10, making it #13 on the list of Best Portable Vaporizers.

The IQ3 is one of the nicest portable dry herb vaporizers on the market and the highest-rated full-conduction vaporizer on my list of recommendations. Its large bowl is a controversial feature. Full-time vape users may find the .7g bowl too large, while smokers who use vaporizers to supplement their consumption will find it perfect.

Build Quality

Davinci is known for making high-quality vaporizers, and the IQ3 may be the nicest vape they’ve ever made. The larger size gives the Davinci IQ design more room to shine. The hinges are smooth, and all of the little flaps align perfectly. The IQ3 feels like a precision-made vaporizer. It’s heavy for its size and feels solid and durable in the hand.

The IQ3 is larger than the previous IQ2 and IQC, but it doesn’t feel much bigger in the hand or the pocket.

The Davinci IQ3 is constructed of mostly metal and zirconia.

Davinci IQ3 User Interface

The Davinci IQ is one of the most accessible dry herb vapes to load and use. The bowl is built with an entirely smooth funnel-shaped loading zone, so no herb ever gets stuck there.

Five clicks of the power button turn the device off and on, while a single click switches the IQ3 between Smart Path and Temperature vaping modes. Smart Paths are pre-programmed temperature progression sessions where the temperature starts low and finishes high.

The Up/Down buttons set precise temperatures or cycle between the four built-in paths while in Smart Path mode.

This vape is also Bluetooth capable and Smart-Phone enabled.

Vapor & Effects

The vapor from the Davinci IQ3 is cool and tasty. The large bowl extracts gently to prevent the burnt popcorn taste that many despise. Depending on the vape temperature and potency of the herb, the vapor session may last 8-12 minutes.

This vape uses a conduction oven to produce vapor. Conduction effects are typically stoney and sedative compared to a convection vaporizer’s cerebral and mental effects.

The best way to use the Davinci IQ3 is with a sipping-style session. Gentle inhales, or even mouth-pulls, work better than long, hard inhales.

The Davinci IQ3 is not a big ripper but can produce massive clouds with the proper technique.

Big Bowl: Perk or Problem?

Portable dry herb vaporizers are not mainstream, and there aren’t any standards. My complaint about the bowl size may be a selling point for many. Feedback has been mixed, and I’ve heard from dozens that they love the large bowl.

Dry herb vaporizers are the most efficient ways to consume cannabis. Many modern ball vapes use .2g or less and extract the entire bowl in one or two dab-like hits with dab-like effects.

The IQ3 bowl vapes .7g, and it’s a 10-minute session.
This is at the opposite end of the performance and experience spectrum that I prefer at home.

This may be great for sharing at a party or a concert where getting medicated is more important than chasing flavor. Still, as cannabis becomes more accessible and normalized, consumers are demanding full flavor and maximum efficiency.

For comparison, I currently use the Vapvana Ace as my daily vaporizer. I vape through a bong and load .08g into its bowl. One hit completely vaporizes that .08g and leaves me medicated for 30-40 minutes. I can get by on 1g per day while being high most of the day.

I like taking bong rips. The Davinci IQ is not a good bong ripper.

Vaping on the IQ3 is like Smoking a Joint

The Davinci IQ3 holds .7g, about the size of an average joint. The vape heats up in 30 seconds and the bowl produces vapor for 8-12 minutes – similar to the burn time of a joint.

Vapor is pulled from the IQ3 in little sips, not direct inhale, just like a blunt or a joint.

The vapor is smooth, cool, and delicious while being 4x more potent than smoke.

They’ll make you cough, and you’ll feel both in your throat.

You won’t stink like an ashtray and have bad breath after vaping, though.

Evolving My Davinci IQ3 Review

At first, the big bowl was such a turn-off that I struggled even to test the IQ3. I vape small doses, frequently throughout the day, and my typical bowl size is only .1g. Packing .7g and vaping it all in one session makes this vape similar to the Volcano Vaporizer for me – it’s a massive dose compared to other portable dry herb vaporizers.

After spending more time with the Davinci IQ3 and talking with other vape users, I’ve grown to understand the need and desire to have such a large bowl. Many dry herb vape users are not exclusive to the method. Many smokers vape sometimes, and many vape users smoke sometimes.

The large bowl and conduction heating serve cannabis smokers very well. The larger dose is closer to what a joint smoker is used to, and the effects from conduction are more sedative and stoney. To a smoker, the IQ3 will express terpenes like they’ve never tasted.

The IQ3 might be the best dry herb vaporizer for quitting smoking, but it may not meet the needs of a dedicated vape user. I’d only carry this vape in limited circumstances. See my list of the Best Portable Vapes to see which vapes I use.

I've been medicating with vaporizers, legally, since 2012. I started reviewing dry herb vaporizers and other cannabis products in 2015. I fell in love with creating content around vapes and cannabis vaporization. I'm passionate about the topic and the community. I love bringing people together and I love helping them understand the ins and outs of vaping weed.

Great work as usual Troy! Just one question can you put two pods from the IQ2 in the bowl at the same time?

Thanks Dan! I’m not sure, I’ll have to see if I can find some of my IQ2 pods… my accessories are a mess

    Awesome review as always!
The Davinci Ascent (with all its design flaws) is the vape that got me to even consider switching to vaping (coming from several joints a day routine), dynavap pushed me further down the path and the Mighty allowed me to make the full switch. This IQ3 looks awesome indeed for joint smokers looking to make the switch, looks ideal for concert discreet toking too!

That’s wonderful. I’ve heard so many positive stories about the Davinci Ascent. I never had one, but I’d like to find one for my collection!
I’m really torn on the bowl size and need to do more testing and searching for other perspectives.

Hey Troy! Really appreciate your reviews :)

I’m not sure if its still to early to tell, but is satans anus still a pain to clean on the IQ3? Ive had both the IQ and IQ2, and while the IQ2 definitely had some improvements in terms of cleaning satans anus, it still got dirty after a few months of use.

I think the main issue is that Davinci uses those rubber gaskets in the anus, meaning that resin just naturally gets soaked into the rubber pores, making it impossible to fully clean even with countless isopropyl soaked q-tips.

The other issue is that the ‘gap’ between the bottom of the bowl and the rubber gasket is also impossible to fully reach and clean , so resin/particles will just get trapped in there with no way out.

All this meaning that you can never get fully ‘clean’ flavored hits as there will always be that taste of used resin reheating in that area, to the point that even if the oven isn’t loaded but heated up, you can still see it producing small amounts vapor.

I’m really hoping the IQ3 improves on that , otherwise Ill just stick with my IQ2 for now !

Yeah I think it will still be a pain. It’s bigger though, so it might actually be easier. We’ll find out after a few months of use :)
