Kannastor GR8TR Grinder Review

The Kannastor GR8TR has been on my list of weed grinders to review for many years. Love for the GR8TR is abundant in the cannabis community, and this grinder is often considered one of the best.

Kannastor designed the GR8TR with as much function and flexibility as possible. This grinder has built-in nug storage and can be reconfigured to add or remove features in numerous ways.

The Kannastor GR8TR has a medium/fine grind consistency. It comes with both Medium and Fine grind plates and a removable stainless steel kief screen.

It’s $90 directly from RYOT.

Agile, Adaptable & Convertable

The 8-piece Kannastor GR8TR can be configured in several ways. I like using it as a 3-piece grinder with the glass ring and extra plate removed. The GR8TR comes with two different grind plates, medium and fine. The additional plate is conveniently stored in the lid.

The top piece of the GR8TR has a built-in storage compartment. The domed cap unscrews to open it, making it perfect for traveling with a few nugs. It’s large enough to hold a gram or two.

The top and bottom pieces can also be threaded together as a storage container, with or without the center section. This is perfect for pre-grinding and traveling with just the jar, leaving the heavier grinder components home.

The Kannistor Gr8TR is 8 pieces in total. Here its shown as a 3-piece grinder with extra components removed.

Teeth & Grinding Experience

This grinder is not like typical weed grinders. The GR8TR has short, stubby teeth on both the top and bottom. The teeth are sharp, and the GR8TR grinds weed quickly. The shorter teeth make turning the grinder through dense, sticky nugs easier than with most weed grinders.

The shorter teeth work great and feel great to use. The grinding experience feels similar to toothless grinders in that the nugs aren’t completely obliterated by big, sharp teeth. The little teeth actually grip the nugs, so they don’t just smear around like toothless grinders.

The Kannastor GR8TR works best with single-nug grinding. It can handle large nugs and multiple nugs at once, but it gets a bit clunky, and the grind consistency starts to suffer.

The GR8TR scored a 9/10 in the Joy of Use category. It’s a pleasure to use, especially the grinding action.

Grind Quality & Consistency

The quality and consistency of the ground flower is essential, especially for dry herb vaporizers. The GR8TR has a lovely grind consistency, and the quality of the grind is nice and fluffy. I have been using the Medium grind plate and found it to be perfect for all of my vaporizer usage.

The GR8TR also has a fine grind plate for an even finer grind. The Medium plate is fine enough for me.

Does it jam or gunk up?

I’ve been testing the Kannastor GR8TR since the spring of 2024 and have not had any issues with this grinder jamming or getting overly gunked up. The top teeth and grinding chamber can easily be maintained with a brush. I haven’t needed to do any maintenance on the GR8TR yet. I will update this review accordingly as I continue to use this grinder.

So Many Threads, Though

Versatility comes with a cost, and with the Kannastor GR8TR, that cost is complications. Even in its simplest form, the GR8TR consists of five metal pieces that can all be turned or unthreaded.

It looks and feels like a high-end camera lens, with all of the individual rings that turn to adjust the photographer’s settings.

Opening the GR8TR requires precision gripping. It’s not excessive or annoying, but it’s not as simple and mindless as many other weed grinders.

All of these threaded connectors also mean tiny gaps where weed dust collects.

Kief Collecting Screen (4 Piece)

The GR8TR has a removable stainless steel screen for separating kief from the ground weed. Using this grinder with the screen also requires using the center mid-section. While configured as a 3-piece, the midsection is optional.

I like that they made the screen removable. Kief screens are notoriously impossible to clean without cleaning the whole grinder. The GR8TR kief screen can be removed for cleaning or left out altogether.

I prefer slightly more potent weed. Keep my kief in, please.

My Cat loves this grinder, he plays with the extra pieces.

Why Choose the GR8TR

The Kannastor GR8TR shines as a modular travel grinder. If you smoke on the go and prefer to keep everything in one place, the GR8TR has much to offer. It’s a sleek and sexy accessory that provides a lot of convenience in a small package.

At-home smokers who hide their grinder and stash will benefit from this grinder’s ability to hide both at once.

I’ve tested and reviewed nearly 100 weed grinders, and the GR8TR is in the top 10.

GR8TR vs. Other Weed Grinders

The GR8TR is a winning grinder for many reasons, but overall, it loses my at-home reach test to grinders that are more fun to use. As a smoker who uses my grinder four or five times per day, I have higher demands.

The GR8TR is a joy to use and carry, but other grinders are more enjoyable and easier to use.

Where to Buy the GR8TR

RYOT owns Kannastor, and I recommend purchasing directly from the manufacturer to avoid counterfeits and potential warranty issues. The GR8TR comes with a limited LIFETIME WARRANTY.
