IO Hornet Review – Micro Ball Vape With Massive Power

The IO Hornet is a new ball vape developed by two enthusiasts from the 420vapezone community.

IO Hornet is a micro-dosing vaporizer that hits harder than most dry herb vaporizers. It uses a 16mm coil and is compatible with a handful of existing bowls. It’s even compatible with the Dynavap!

The Hornet ball vape is made out of 316L Stainless Steel and contains 100 2.5mm ruby balls.

This ball vape is made for connoisseurs, but it is beginner-friendly. This vape is perfect for consumers who demand maximum efficiency. The IO Hornet is one of the most potent dry herb vaporizers available when measured per gram of material.

The IO Hornet costs $200. It comes with 2 bowls, but you’ll need to provide your own coil.

First Impressions & Design

Over the last two years, I have enjoyed watching the IO Hornet come to life. It started as a DIY project using components from other vaporizers and their bowls. The designers knew they were on to something from the first or second version. Their little vape was punchier and more affordable than other ball vapes while being smaller and more compatible.

The IO Hornet underwent several iterations and improvements while remaining a “personal use” project. This vape was built out of enthusiastic passion to make a badass vape for himself. The Hornet was designed and refined around performance first and foremost.

I love the IO Hornet’s compatibility and agility. This tiny vape feels like a scalpel in hand—immensely powerful.

Bowl Compatibility & Adaptability

The IO Hornet was designed to be compatible with many different bowls and stems. The Hornet includes two custom bowls, one made from 316SS and one made from glass. The IO Hornet is also compatible with the following stems and bowls:

  • Standard Dynavap Tips
  • Lotus WPA
  • 14mm Glass Injector Bowls
  • 14mm Wooden Injector Bowls
  • 18mm Glass Injector Bowls
  • Lotus WPA
  • E-Nano Stems
  • Arizer Argo Stems
  • CH Shovelhead Bowl
  • CH Matrix Bowl
  • TKO Infinity Bowl
  • And more

Coil Size & Adaptability

IO Hornet uses a 16mm coil that is not included. This vape can be cordless or corded but does not include the PID or the coil.

They sell coil adapters to utilize 20mm or 25mm coils, but you’ll still need to provide your own coil and PID.

Cordless ball vapes are cutting-edge vape tech. Check out my Ball Vape Guide for coil options.

Injector / Diffuser Versatility

The Hornet’s multi-bowl compatibility means much more than simply fitting many bowls. The Hornet interface is both an injector and a diffuser.

As an injector, the Hornet is 100% convection vapor. It has 100 tiny ruby spheres packed inside. Air gets super-heated as it’s pulled through the Hornet and the hot air vaporizes the trichome heads off the herb.

As a diffuser, the Hornet engulfs the bowl and heats the bowl and weed with conduction and radiant heat. This additional heating produces a more stoney high. Vapor from the IO Hornet in diffuser mode is considered Hybrid heating.

IO Hornet Performance

This ball vape is a monster! The IO Hornet is considered a micro-dosing vape but very potent. Don’t let the size of this vape or its ball count fool you. The IO Hornet is a heavy hitter.

I like to use the Hornet with the metal bowl or the Lotus WPA. This interfaces with the larger diffuser side of the Hornet, heating the metal bowl and adding conduction and radiant heating. This gives me a stoney and sedative high, often too stoney for daytime use.

The Hornet is less stoney and less power-heavy as an injector. It produces full convection vapor when used as an injector. The bowl will get hot from the hot air passing through it, but it won’t draw heat from the vaporizer itself.

The IO Hornet shines as a micro-diffuser. The added radiant heat adds another level of extraction. The glass stinger bowl that’s included will use radiant heat with less conduction than the metal bowl.

Final Thoughts

This vape rocks. I love its size and its performance. If you’re into getting as high as possible with the smallest amount of weed, this vape is for you.

An innovator and a supporter developed it. It’s efficient, affordable, and powerful.

The IO Hornet is a great ball vape for people looking for a stoney, flavorful hit with tiny amounts of herb.

I've been medicating with vaporizers, legally, since 2012. I started reviewing dry herb vaporizers and other cannabis products in 2015. I fell in love with creating content around vapes and cannabis vaporization. I'm passionate about the topic and the community. I love bringing people together and I love helping them understand the ins and outs of vaping weed.

This little vape often makes me wonder why other vapes are so big.
