When I first started using dry herb vaporizers, weed scoops weren’t even a thing! There were no special tools for scooping or loading cannabis into our vaporizers. I used the cap of a Sharpie marker to load weed into my dry herb vaporizers until the first weed scoop came out – the Delta3dStudios Scoop N Tamp Tool.

Why use a Weed Scoop?
Dry herb vaporizers are precision instruments. Using a scoop instead of your fingers has several benefits.
- More accurate & consistent dosing
- Keeps fingers clean from cannabis smells and stickiness
- Avoid contaminating the cannabis & grinder with finger oils, dead skin cells, and dirt.
- Makes the experience more enjoyable
Weed scoops offer a cleaner and tidier experience, resulting in less waste and increased efficiency. Scooping weed into your vape will also be more consistent than using your fingers.
The BEST Weed Scoop – Old Head Stainless Scoop
This is the scoop that started the parade. Before this scoop, the only weed scoops were the Delta3dStudios scoops, which were just too small for ball vapes. The Old Head Scoop was the first scoop made for ball vapes. Its scoop holds a perfect “bowl full” for desktop vaporizers, and the other end of the scoop makes the perfect tamp tool. The weight of the tool is substantial enough to do the work, no manual downward pressure needed.

The Old Head scoop is made from non-magnetic stainless steel, ensuring no interference when scooping from magnetic grinders. Its scoop is the perfect size for most bowls and vapes, and the curve of the scoop is designed to fit the Brilliant Cut Grinder – the most popular weed grinder for vaporizer users.
The Old Head Scoop set the bar for all the other scoops and is still the King. It’s the one that wins my reach test. Everything about it is perfect. The curvature of the scoop, the scoop size, the weight, the feel, the tamper. I love this scoop.
The Stainless Steel Old Head Scoop is $39. There’s a cheaper aluminum version with PVD coating for $25.

Simrell Scoopy Scoop
This scoop is sleek and sexy. Simrell designed this scoop to be small enough to use with Dynavap vaporizers or larger portable vapes like the Lobo and Venty. The Simrell Scoopy Scoop is also big enough for ball vapes.

Simrell’s Scoop has a great shape that makes it easy to hold and use. Its scoop looks slightly smaller, but its shape allows it to hold as much as .25g.
The Simrell Scoop is available in limited drops that sell out quickly. It comes in Blackwood, Brass, and Titanium and costs $39-$99. Austyn will occasionally anodize these scoops and sell them for more in his gallery.

Crossing Tech Ball Vape Scoop & Microdose Scoop

Crossing Tech’s Big Scoop
This scoop comes with several popular ball vapes, as it’s made by the factory that makes most of the ball vapes.
The CT Scoop works excellently and is available at several online vape stores, as well as on Amazon.

Crossing Tech’s Micro Scoop
The Microdosing Scoop is perfect for small bowls and little vapes. This scoop pairs perfectly with the Vapman, Lotus, Dynavap, and other vapes that use 0.1 g or less.
This little scoop can even be stored in a 3-piece grinder.
The Crossing Tech scoops are nice scoops. They’re not as perfect and refined as the Old Head and Simrell scoops, but they’re more affordable and more accessible as well.

POTV’s The Scoop
Of course, Planet of the Vapes has its own scoop, too! The PotV scoop has a magnet mounted in its tamper end. It’s a basic scoop modeled after the more popular scoops.

My version of the PotV scoop is a color they don’t offer. I was a beta tester, and the final color of their scoop is silver.
This scoop comes with many of the popular vape bundles at Planet of the Vapes these days.
Click Here to buy the PotV Scoop for $21. This scoop works perfectly with the PotV Lobo vaporizer.
Old Mate XL Scoop
This is the newest and largest stainless steel weed scoops to hit the space. The Old Mate scoop was designed to pair with the XL Old Mate Aroma 3 weed grinder, which is an oversized spinning grinder.
This scoop’s curvature is optimized for the XL Aroma 3 grinder, but it works well with other grinders too.

The Old Mate scoop is clearly modeled after the Old Head scoop. The scoop holds a slightly larger amount than the Old Head, and the handle is thicker and heavier. The notch behind the scoop head allows the scoop to rest on the center post of the threadless Old Mate weed grinder.
This is a big scoop. It works best with big grinders and big bowls. It ships from Australia.
Click Here to buy one. It’s $55 AUD, or approximately $36 USD.

SedHed Bowler Scoop Alternative
The Bowler takes a unique approach to bowl loading. Instead of a basic scoop, the Bowler uses a metal tube with a plunger to dispense dry herb. The Bowler packs the bowl and tamps it in one swift motion. It utilizes a spring and plunger to create a clever alternative to a scoop.

The SedHed Bowler is ideal for fully packed bowls and grinders that are fully loaded. It’s not as agile as a basic scoop, as it’s awkward to use with tiny amounts. See my SedHed Bowler Review for a demonstration.
Sedhed also produces some of the nicest vape cases available.

Brocoli Scoop
I avoided this scoop for years because it looks like such a cheesy knock-off of the Old Head scoop, but the price is irresistible.
At just $14.99 and available on Amazon Prime, this compact stainless steel scoop is both affordable and accessible.

This scoop is polished, unlike the other scoops. It’s more slippery and harder to hold than the Old Head scoop, but it’s also lighter and more nimble.
I like this scoop a lot more than I thought I would. The photos on Amazon make it look janky, but it’s smooth and straight.
Click here to buy it from Amazon for $14.99.
I had mine delivered the next day for an extra $2.
Delta3dStudios – The Original Weed Scoop-n-Tamp

Mine broke when I rolled over it with my office chair wheel. The 3d printed stainless steel is strong, but not strong enough to withstand the weight of one Troy.
This scoop is magnetic, so be cautious when using magnetic grinders. This scoop is on the smaller size and works best with portable vapes. If you’re using a ball vape, expect to do some shoveling.

Delta3dStudios makes several different weed scoops, including one with a tamper designed specifically for Pax vaporizers. Nylon version of the Pax scoop is $14.

The plastic 3d printed scoops are less rigid but more affordable.
This Nylon scoop is ~$14

This tiny scoop is 3d printed and available in a bunch of colors. It can even be stored inside your grinder!
This one is only $5.90

There are a bunch of shitty little spice spoons on Amazon, but nothing worth mentioning. I have them all, and they’re either too cheap, too big, too small, or simply useless.
Weed Scoops that Fit Inside a Grinder
Keep things simple by storing your scoop inside your grinder. These scoops are small enough to stow away in the bottom section of most three or 4-piece weed grinders.

The Rogue Wax Works Grinder Buddy fits inside many grinders. It’s made from food-safe PLA and costs only $6.
Rogue Wax Works also has a great selection of handmade scoops and dab tools.

Delta3DStudios produces a few small scoops that fit snugly in the lower part of a weed grinder. My favorite is the stainless steel micro scoop with the pointy handle.

I have a lot of scoops that are no longer available or are not relevant enough, but I want to showcase them here as a tribute to the history of weed scoops.

These Weed Tongs came with the 7th Floor Sidekick vaporizer. They had a love/hate relationship.

This scoop came with my CouchLog – it has an extendable poker tool that’s sharp AF.

I tested the Old Head prototype scoop for nearly a year while begging Brian to bring the metal version to market.

Austyn Simrell’s very first scoop, made just for me.

The glass weed scoop and poker tool are too fragile and difficult to see. These should be avoided.

This pipe and poke tool has a scoop on it, but it’s pretty much useless for weed. Don’t bother.

Oconnell Woodworks made some nice soops when he was making vapes and accessories. These scoops were the best for scooping up spilled balls, but the worst for scooping up weed from a grinder.
DIY Weed Scoops
Before weed scoops were a thing, I used to use a cleaned up Sharpie cap to load weed into my vaporizer.
